How to recover deleted files

Files are stored as blocks on storage disk as a linked structure. The root directory ( or the initial sectors in the storage disk ) hold details like file name, location, size, date of creation, link to the first block of a file ( if file is divided into multiple blocks ) and other details. These details are created by the operating system when the file is created.

When a file is deleted by the OS like Windows XP or 7 they are marked such that they are only available through the Recycle bin. If the file is also deleted from the Recycle bin then the link to the file is lost and the OS cannot find it. But the file is still present on the disk and the lost link can be recovered back using file recovery softwares such as -
  • PCI file recovery tool , Pandora file recovery ( both freeware )
  • Data doctor data recovery
  • PC tools File Recover
If deleted file gets over written by any other new file then it cannot be recovered back and is lost for ever. Even a disk format can partially destroy a deleted file. Some file recovery softwares can also recover back files damaged by quick format. Keeping your self equipped with one or two of these tools can be very useful at times.
